How do you install additional packages in Fedora Core 5? I've used FC3 some and I know you could do system-config-packages and you could install more packages that way. All I see in FC5 is system-install-packages, but it comes up saying no packages to install. What do I do? Thanks,
Open the package manager (add/remove SW--or something similar) in the GUI. Look for a setting to determine what repositories are used---add more repositories if necessary (The Fedora web site should list what is available)
The package manager/repository system is one of the great strengths of Linux. IMHO, Fedora does not have the best system. Much better is APT/Synaptic, used by various members of the Debian family, plus PCLinuxOS

I tried that, but it told me that there were no packages ready for installation. I was just thinking though that I may not have been logged in as root, I am sure that that would make a difference, right?
Do you know how to install them from a terminal window though? Like the old system-config-packages in FC3.
I've had great luck using yum to install new packages. As long as I know the name of the package, I can just run 'yum -i [packagename]' (without quotes). It takes care of dependencies automatically, and ensures you have the latest versions installed.

There are commands for updates, but there is also (somewhere) a menu item for installing SW. In RHEL4 it is in Applications --> System Settings --> Add/Remove Applications. When you open this, there should be a preference/configuration item to select the repository.
If you can get in front of a Ubuntu, system, open Synaptic to see what I am talking about.
