I have Fedora 12 distro. I tried to use command
ls | lpr
for fun but the error message has arised I dont have the printer, the driver for it, if to say more precisely. But when I inserted the disk with software, the CD-ROM disappeared from my computer. What should I do to install it? I have no experience installing something yet.
If you do not have the printer why would you want to install a driver for it and how do you know you will buy that printer. We would need to know the brand name and model no. to be able to help more. As the cd probably has the driver for windows only on it.
I have the printer. It is Samsung ML-1610. I have Fedora installed under windows xp by using of VMware. Probably the disk has no driver for linux. You right. Is it possible to google the driver for this model for linux?
Did you read this post and go to the link provided to setup the printer?
I believe you have a package manager called yum and it should list packages you have installed and there you can check and see if cups is installed. Cups is a printer driver package for linux distros.
Sorry for delay. I have been discovering yum manager 'cause i have had any expirience using it. I saw link provided by UnderVbut i cant finish it because I dont know what to do if my printer has not automatically appeared. My printer is connected to USB port (not via network). I have fedora installed upon windows on VMware. There are only LTP#1 and serial ports arising during printer configuration. No USB ports. To discover other port the URI is required. But how to discover URI of needed USB port? what is URI?
As for yum manager i discovered that two packages named CUPS are installed - with version 1.4.1 and 1.4.2. So what should i do next?
If you will read the link provided by UnderV you will get step by step directions. If you have problems with these directions please come back and tell us where you ran into the problem and I will try and help you. Do not worry about the connection at this time, the directions should ask you if necessary.
The problem is in the part called "adding local printer". There are only parallel port and com ports. If I pick one the next page suggests to pick printer from the list. But there is no Samsung 1610 series, only Samsung 1650. So if I pick for example LTP port (instead of USB of which I dont know the URI) and then I pick 1650 (instead of 1610) the new printer appears but no page is printed afterwards.
