how do i shut down x?

i used to use 6.2 and to start xwindows i would type start x, and if i needed to restart i would shut it down, and retype startx.

now i use rh9, and have put it on the gui, how do i shut down the gui? i can get to C-M-F2, i know that much, but how do i totally shut down x so i can install some new drivers... also on the same idea, how do i shut down any service and then restart it?

shutdown now -h or is it shutdown -h now (edit - that's to shut down the system)

it's one of those two...i just learned that one the other day!!! lol

control - alt - backspace will shut down x, or logging out will shutdown x (well it does since i have it set up to drop me out at a prompt when i log out)
