cannot shut down

I am running Mandrake 8.2 and I cannot log out, especially when I am in the graphic (X) mode.
When I attempt to log out via the log out screen, the OS just flips me back the the command line mode and never shuts down. Please advise. Thank you.

Try the command

halt

or

shutdown -h now

You may have to be root... If you get command not found for both of those, do su and enter the root password first. Then try them again.
