How do I restart services in Linux

Hi all, how do I restart services in linux, I am using Mandrake 8.2 and my SBLIVE 5.1 worked the first few times I booted but now has mysteriously vanished all the audio appz tell me they are unable to open audio device and to see if I have permission to open /dev/mixer (mixer program example), I can live without my DVD 100i and HP 960c not working but sound is rather important to me. Any help will be appreciated, thanks much.

On my RedHat 7.2 system the sound server goes up and down with Gnome or KDE. For other services, I can either use "/sbin/service" or I can can directly run one of the scripts in "/etc/init.d"

service <servicename> start;stop;status

just go far init level 2 and then go far init levl 3
init 2
init 3
all services will be restarted when entering level init level 2
