hey guys i need help

I'm quite a noob in linux.

This was my first time I'm installed Linux Mandrake 9

After the installation and the log in of linux (as root)

when I logged in successfully and wont to start:

startx
or
startkde
or
startgnome

they said there was an error:::

/etc/X11/XF86Config

config error= /etc/X11/XF86Config:11

monitor "monitor1(underlined)"
Not a declared monitor

When I install mandrake I had to choose an X-server

so I have taken the Nvidia , Geforce 4

you can test your configuration in the installation self (of the monitor), but already there was a config error

I have a MSI (microstar) TI 4200 VTD8X (agp 8x)
(geforce 4)

but that wasn't in the X-server list or something like that

So i'm now onl in the console

what can I do about it.???

Somebody can help me
plz

Thx
Pieter

Try the xf86config program. Or, edit the file /etc/X11/XF86Config manually -it's well documented! For example, my monitor section looks like this:
Note: The important parts are horizontal and vertical refresh rates. DON'T JUST COPY THESE! Might damage your monitor... These values are in the manual for the monitor.

# **********************************************************************
# Monitor section
# **********************************************************************

# Any number of monitor sections may be present

Section "Monitor"

Identifier "My Monitor"

# HorizSync is in kHz unless units are specified.
# HorizSync may be a comma separated list of discrete values, or a
# comma separated list of ranges of values.
# NOTE: THE VALUES HERE ARE EXAMPLES ONLY. REFER TO YOUR MONITOR'S
# USER MANUAL FOR THE CORRECT NUMBERS.

HorizSync 31.5 - 64.3

# HorizSync 30-64 # multisync
# HorizSync 31.5, 35.2 # multiple fixed sync frequencies
# HorizSync 15-25, 30-50 # multiple ranges of sync frequencies

# VertRefresh is in Hz unless units are specified.
# VertRefresh may be a comma separated list of discrete values, or a
# comma separated list of ranges of values.
# NOTE: THE VALUES HERE ARE EXAMPLES ONLY. REFER TO YOUR MONITOR'S
# USER MANUAL FOR THE CORRECT NUMBERS.

VertRefresh 50-150

EndSection

try configuring it in text mode...i know its pretty hard but it would be the next best thing besides re installing it again...

just use any editors(vi, pico, etc...) to configure the file lenny showed here...lenny is right, dont simply copy the settings. it might mess up your monitor...it could cause permanent damage

or you could use Xconfigurator....

good luck
