Gnome Desktop launchers appear as .desktop and do not function

Whenever I try to use a launcher I have created I get an error window that says Cannot open *.desktop and has and error message. Ive attached an image on this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=616964

First, let me give you a couple of pieces of info about your UbuntuForums posting that you might not be aware of. I imagine you gave us a link to the thread because LQ doesn't allow you to upload anything. None-the-less, people have to log in to view that image at UbuntuForums, which means only UbuntuForums members can view it. (Fortunately, I am such a member. Not many posts over there, but I can login. )

The other thing is that image takes a *very* *long* *time* to download over dialup. Only a small part of the image contains the actual information you want people to see. It would have been much better if you had taken an image of just the window with the error message.

But back to your problem ... That message appears to be a security warning that the content of the file does not match the extension for the file. Perhaps you should post the contents of the file.

Sorry about that, I guess it has become commonplace to ignore the considerations of dial-up users. This time I just used a firefox launcher, because no matter what I have the same effect on all of my launchers.

Ok, the only way I was able to fix this problem was to create a new user account and transfer my files and settings. This is obviously a drastic solution, but nonetheless a solution.

Thanks for making that image more dial-up friendly. While you were fixing the problem, I was trying to Google to find out about MIME associations in Gnome. I still have not figured it out, but I suspect that is where the problem was. Gnome simply didn't think that was the right format for a .desktop file.

So I am glad you got it fixed even if the fix wasn't elegant! If anybody knows about how Gnome does the MIME associations or how they may have been altered (if indeed that was the problem) I would sure be interested in knowing it!
