Question Fedora 9 GNOME display issue

I recently installed Fedora 9 onto an old computer of mine. I was trying to setup the network using system-config-network but each time, after I enter in root password I get the following error message:
Quote:
No protocol specified
ERROR: Unable to initialize graphical environment. Most likely cause of failure is that the tool was not run using a graphical environment. Please either start your graphical user interface or set your DISPLAY variable.
I get the same message when I run ANY of the system- or gnome- commands, even from the GNOME desktop. Yes, I have a desktop environment loaded, despite the error message.

I have looked through various forums and the only thing I could find, without modifying python scripts (which was an answer to another issue) was to "export DISPLAY=:0". Which I did, without any luck. The error was not changed.

Checking out Xorg.log.0 (another suggestion without a final resolution) I get an error repeatedly saying:
Quote:
AUDIT: Mon Jul 14 21:11:32 2008: 2025 Xorg: client 32 rejected from local host ( uid=0 gid=0 pid=30769 )
I am really not sure why I am getting this error. Any suggestions?

AMD XP 1500+
Linux Kernal 2.6.25-14.fc9.i686
GNOME 2.22.3

fedora 9 will not run on an old computer
the computer MUST have a new ( less than 3 years old ) graphics card
fedora 8 MIGHT run with no graphics card IF there is also an on broad chipset on the mother board or if you have an old 5 to 8 year old graphics card installed
---------
as it stands with your sys
according to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors
the 1500 is from 2001 and you Do not have a card installed
-----
1)run in TEXT ONLY ( no gui , no Gnome, KDE ,no games or videos )
2)maybe DamSmallLinux or PuppyLinux might run

But it does "run"...and the minimum specs required are a 400MHz machine..no mention of graphics card. There is a graphics card: PNY GeForce FX5300. I can log into the machine and the GNOME desktop pops up, its just the system-config utilities that will not display. Gedit is able to be opened, firefox, system monitor and others. I dont understand what the processor has to do with a graphics card error? Please advise...

[SOLVED] Fedora 9 GNOME display issue

With the help of the FedoraForums, I found the solution: reinstall system-config-network. I am really unsure why this fixed the GNOME issues, but by just reintalling (yum reinstall system-config-network) the network section fixed all the other system-confg-* apps. Again, unsure why. Thanks for the help!
