exiting X produces garbage all over screen

I am running RedHat 8.0. I am sure this question is obvious, so please forgive a newbie!

I am currently running KDE, when I init to level 3 or press Control-Alt-F2, the whole screen produces lovely coloured garbage. I can tell from the patterning that I am at the login prompt, so if I login in again as root, I can get back without rebooting the computer.

....any suggestions please ??

hmmm...what happens if you type 'clear'? Does it clear the garbage?
