screen garbage when scrolling in X-Windows

I run Mandrake 9.2. When I am using Mozilla or OpenOffice and scroll the window, the characters at the bottom edge of the window are garbled or compressed, like a line of pixels going all the way across the screen has been lost.

Does anybody else have this problem? What gives? Is there a solution? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
