Debian Sarge Base System Configuration error


When I try to install "Desktop Environment" I get the error "Debian Base System Configuration
There was a problem installing the selected software
One or more packages failed to install ..."

Well we will need more information than that to be able to help trouble shoot the error, like what command was used, packages it failed to install, contents of the /etc/apt/sources.list ... things like that. One thing you can try though is apt-get install xserver-xorg xfonts-base kde kdm with any luck that should get you kde installed if wanting gnome then put gdm and gnome in the command you could also use aptitude install if using that instead of apt-get and you might want xserver-xfree86 since I see you are using sarge.

Another option is to bail on Sarge and install Etch.

Unless you have some very specific reason for installing Sarge, that is the only "correct" option.

I think I'll give Etch a shot. Incidentally the error was during the first time setup procedure following a first time installation.
