Debian sarge base install error

I'm trying to install debian sarge. Nothing special there i've done this several times. only this time during the base install (about 33%) I get an error.

"The debootstrap program exited with an error (return value 2).
Check /var/log/messages or see virual console 3 for the details.

<Go Back> <Continue>

I checked the console and the log. they both contain the same thing which is:

lot of insmod's
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.8-1-386/kernel/drivers/net/8139too.ko
No matching physical volumes found
No volume groups found
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
dpkg: syntax error: unknown user 'root' in statusoverride file
unmount: /target/dev/pts: No such file or directory
unmount: /target/dev/shm: No such file or directory
unmount: /target/proc/bus/usb: Invalid argument

I have absolutely no idea what this is or how i can fix it. So any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Richard

This is absolutely NOT a media issue.

I've installed debian 3.1 r0a on 2 diff pc's without ANY incident.
1 was a "real" pc; one was vmware.

I just attempted installation on vmware installed on my notebook - and I got the same message! - almost - my msg said return value 132.

does anyone know why this is?
