^V paste doesn't always work in the X terminal. Gnome has some Cntrl+Shift+V way to paste, or did long ago. I mostly highlight and middle mouse to paste for terminal things.

not just gnome
ctrl+shift+V is the way to paste on a term
If you want to "paste" a literal <enter>
Ctrl+v<enter>
you will then see ^M
In a terminal, the Cntrl+A is the same as the |HOME| key, and Cntrl+e is the same as the |END| key. With Cntrl+L being the same as issuing the $(clear) command. Probably why clear doesn't appear in the .bash_history. As far as other terminal hotkeys, I haven't had much luck with those outside of stock ubuntu. If you run debian minimal installs and such, they simply do not work (unless you install something I'm not yet familiar with). At least not in xterm, urxvt, or on the console.

I wasn't talking about terminals, and I don't think OP was either.
