BIOS Doesn't Boot From DVD ROM, ISO Image On DVD.

Hi I am trying Ubuntu Studio for mum, and it is on DVD ROM. I burned it well.

Then, I found I had to press del and change the BIOS, but no luck, the BIOS does not have a DVD boot option at all. I tried them all.

I can add a BIOS setting via floppy. I don't know how.

I would appreciate some advice on how to boot from DVD ROM. It seems to be all that is stopping me.

If your computer doesn't support booting from DVD or CD, you can't boot from it, period. It doesn't matter what OS you try, your system won't be able to boot from it.

You don't say what kind of hardware/motherboard/BIOS you're using, so it's hard to give any help. The only thing you MIGHT be able to do is to upgrade your BIOS, to enable booting from that device. However, this must be a fairly old computer, to not support booting from CD/DVD.

So... your BIOS won't boot from the CD-drive?

If you can put a CD into the drive and boot it, and if that same drive could (in other situations) play a DVD if you put one in, then this implies (to me...) that the format of the data on the drive might be incorrect. I don't know hardware well enough to say for sure, but if on this computer you can select a CD/DVD ROM device, you ought to be able to boot from it whether it's a CD or a DVD as long as the data-format is correct.

But... I'm Not A Hardware-H4x0r...

if there is no option straightaway for booting off DVD, well, you're screwed. but if it DOES, there are still more than 1 standard (El torito and whatever else), which have to match (between the ROM and the DVD).

Can the computer boot fron CD-ROM? - that is equivalent and includes DVD-ROM also.
...and just to point to another possible thing:
How did you burn the DVD? Make sure you burnt the iso image to the disk to create a bootable disk - but not the iso image as a file.
If on the DVD is just the iso file then you did it wrong.

There is an application called Smart Boot Manager.You burn it to a floppy disc.With the disc in the computer and the floppy containing SBM,you then switch it on.The smart boot manager screen should appear and allow you to select boot from dvd.I have used this before with good results.Hope it helps.

You are right, CD ROM does it, and the DVD was burned wrong, in a new burning program I didn't know well.

Is it Create ISO or Burn ISO?

So I am installing Open SUSE Dec 07, I was justing testing it, now I'll see it. No actually, there was a problem shrinking a partition.

depends on the program - I'd say Burn ISO - consult the help or the manual - you want to end up with a bootable disk made from the image you have
