cannot boot dvd from dvd + media and rom

hi

I need to know how to do the floppy boot to start dvd rom.

I get a low wirring noise when I try to boot from rom. The drive is a pioneer dvd 116 r from a sony vaio. I have upgraded the firmware to version 1.22 rpc disabled firmware.

http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Unable_to_Boot_from_the_DVD plus it is maxell dvds

I believe it might be a bios limitation but this machine has a 1.33 ghz amd cpu and came with a 40 gig hard drive, so I thought it was beyond the whole not being able to boot from roms.

Is there a way to use a boot disk? the iso is good btw and has a filesystem when explored.

You might need to open the bios setup program, which usually requires hitting the:

DEL

key on boot up. There is usually a message right when the machine starts to press a certain key for bios setup. It could also be the:

F1

or

F2

key. Set your machine so it boots from the cdrom first.

Thats what it sounds like to me also. Once your PC is set to boot from the CD rom, and assuming the ISO was properly burned, you should be fine.

According to the link you posted, Suse doesn't even know whats causing it, so I doubt anyone here will be able to pinpoint it. I take it you're trying to install Suse, you might try the Suse forum.

Check the disk

Open the disk in Windows Explorer or Konqueror. It should have lots of files on it. If it only has one big file you need to burn a new disk using the "Burn Image" or "From ISO" option in your burning software.

Did you run an md5 sum on the downloaded .iso file? It can be corrupt. Also, some burning software offers a "Verify" option that checks the disk after it is burned (K3b). I tried many times to download the Suse 10.1 DVD and I never got a good disk. I finally just got the 4 CD images and made CD's to do the install.

Tell us if any of this worked. Good luck.

Make sure that your BIOS is set correctly to which device first. a previous comment using F1 or F2 to get into your BIOS, if that doesn't work, try the DEL key.

Another thing about older DVD-Roms. The DVD-ROM may only be a DVD-R or DVD+R. Newer ones can read both DVD-R and DVD+R (DVD-+R).
