ati mobility on presario 900us laptop

i have fedora core 3 installed on my laptop. my biggest problem as far as video is concerned is that i can't change my resolution to 1024x768. initially when i tried to change the res to 1024x768 it would change the res but the screen would be messed where everything on the left inch of the screen would also be on the right edge of the screen in addition to some other quirks. anyway i found another forum that suggested going into xorg.conf and changing the video driver to vesa which i did but all this did was take the option of 1024x768 off the list of available resolutions. does anyone have any ideas as to get my resolution up to 1024x768?
