ATI Mobility drivers for middle-aged laptop - SOLVED

Sorry, I don't know why, but following instructions from a RedHat post solved the problem, when I'm sure they're no different than what I tried before (use the r128 generic driver, number 7 under xorgconfig). My bad.

I'll admit I've not yet dug deep into this, but I'm curious if anyone else out there is using a laptop of the same vintage as mine (Compaq Presario 1800T - the 1Ghz, 15" model) and has installed a different X server than the default installed by Slack?

I'm happy enough with mine, but I can't figure out how to make this server actually use the system fully, powering the monitor to 1400x1050 like I could back in the bad old days under Windows.

The ATI site wasn't really very useful, so any anectodal evidence would be greatly appreciated.

I bought my laptop when it was cutting edge, and couldnt get
3d working on it for the longest time. Had to run in VESA mode.
I think theres even some posts still here on LQ.

Compaq 900z - Radeon Mobility U1.

The new Xorg 6.8.1 did it for me right out of the box.
There are very detailed posts floating around here somewhere..
Ill try to look them up later (at work atm).

Good luck to ya..

Probably alot of them are from me. My advice, don't waiste your time. ATI's drivers are pants. They should seriously be ashamed of themselves.

The new ones work with Xorg 6.8.1, but you'll notice a few problems with fullscreen, and it will crash your laptop atleast once a day (ruined my firefox, had to reinstall it).

I went back to the 'radeon' drivers, and thankfully i noticed Diablo2 works on 2D =))
