im posting this from windows 7 which had no difficulty picking up the wifi whatsoever.

i detest windows and want it out of my life, but cant until this Mint 19 prob is rectified.

Does anybody think a reinstall of Mint will resolve the matter please?

It's either the kernel or absence of drivers for the card.

There are quite a few instances of this problem with your card.

Look at this thread:

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=252704

Specifically:

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtop...52704#p1359678

If that doesn't work, connect to the internet via ethernet and install the package linux-firmware-nonfree through the package manager or

Code:
sudo apt install linux-firmware-nonfree
then reboot.

Bear in mind that when you type your password in the terminal, it is always blank. You see no characters whatsoever, but your keystrokes are registering.

Hmmf, looks like the package doesn't exist anymore or has been renamed.

Did you follow the other links I gave and tried the advice therein?

EDIT: OK good.

EDIT2: Here's another link for ease, read the whole page as well as trying the point I've linked to:

Based on the details you've described, the simplest explanation is that you are entering the wrong password (or the right password, for the wrong network). If that is the case then no, reinstalling Mint will not solve the problem.

Did you have a chance to check your BSSID in Windows, to verify you are indeed trying to connect to the correct network?

ive entered the various changes to setting that have been suggested and now have no wifi on windows 7 which represents a backward step because i had wifi on windows before the alterations.

i would like for both windows and mint to have wifi :-!

ive got mac number now (from a windows pop up thing) and other details. No BSSID though. What will i do?

If you can't connect to your router from either Windows or Mint, that's more evidence suggesting that you're using the wrong password, or some other non-Linux problem.

Who administers the router in your household? It might be a worthwhile troubleshooting step to (temporarily!) disable the wifi password, see if that allows you to connect to the network.

You may be on to something here snowpine. Windows has reconnected to the interweb via wifi, so that prob is fixed!

I have checked BSSID. It gives 4C:1b:86:31:22:7c

I think that varies from the mac number (by one figure) an 8 instead of a B

im going back to linux now, and trying to be optimistic. Thank you, i hope you will not mind if i call again for help?

If I understand correctly, that means you want to connect to the 5ghz network BTHub6-SZJ6 (and NOT the 2.4ghz network of the same name).

Happy to continue helping you. This is mysterious but I bet we can get it sorted out.

csn we work at this from what a hardware person would ask make model and year of PC. if custom built PC please give Motherborad info. rhat you know that you can cross reference that with Linux laptops or Linux network.
since i read this much of this still do not know make model and serial number. hard to help.
lspci will help
but will not tell me if you have a firmware issue for thet net device dmesg command could help.
but to actually know the product helps

Absolute novice wifi not functioning on Mint 19
more info and we can help.
what the first thing you look up on the support site for your product.
product name and model and year.
what think pad mmm
