If that doesn't work, connect to the internet via ethernet and install the package linux-firmware-nonfree through the package manager or
Code:
sudo apt install linux-firmware-nonfree
then reboot.

Does anybody think a reinstall of Mint will resolve the matter please?
Based on the details you've described, the simplest explanation is that you are entering the wrong password (or the right password, for the wrong network). If that is the case then no, reinstalling Mint will not solve the problem.
Did you have a chance to check your BSSID in Windows, to verify you are indeed trying to connect to the correct network?
ive entered the various changes to setting that have been suggested and now have no wifi on windows 7 which represents a backward step because i had wifi on windows before the alterations.
i would like for both windows and mint to have wifi :-!
ive got mac number now (from a windows pop up thing) and other details. No BSSID though. What will i do?
If you can't connect to your router from either Windows or Mint, that's more evidence suggesting that you're using the wrong password, or some other non-Linux problem.
Who administers the router in your household? It might be a worthwhile troubleshooting step to (temporarily!) disable the wifi password, see if that allows you to connect to the network.
csn we work at this from what a hardware person would ask make model and year of PC. if custom built PC please give Motherborad info. rhat you know that you can cross reference that with Linux laptops or Linux network.
since i read this much of this still do not know make model and serial number. hard to help.
lspci will help
but will not tell me if you have a firmware issue for thet net device dmesg command could help.
but to actually know the product helps
Absolute novice wifi not functioning on Mint 19
