Freshclam is the virus-database updatetool. In freshclam.log you'll find the log of the update. It looks like this:
Code:
--------------------------------------
Received signal: wake up
ClamAV update process started at Sun Apr 2 11:26:20 2006
main.cvd is up to date (version: 36, sigs: 44686, f-level: 7, builder: tkojm)
daily.cvd updated (version: 1366, sigs: 3564, f-level: 7, builder: arnaud)
Database updated (48250 signatures) from db.local.clamav.net (IP: 195.246.234.199)
--------------------------------------
Received signal: wake up
ClamAV update process started at Sun Apr 2 12:26:24 2006
main.cvd is up to date (version: 36, sigs: 44686, f-level: 7, builder: tkojm)

Daemon stands for [b]d[/]isk and execution monitor. It runs in the background and checks files for virus on-access.

This is from the ChangeLog:
Code:
Sun Sep 19 02:06:06 CEST 2004 (tk)
----------------------------------
  * etc/clamav.conf: rename clamd.conf
So, both are the same file, but it was renamed on september the 19th in 2004.
