vmlinuz.version.h problem compiling D-Link PCI ethernet adapter driver

G'day,

I am trying to install a D-Link PCI ethernet adapter onto my Mandrake 9.1 system running kernel version 2.4.21.

The cd comes with linux drivers that are compatible with kernel version 2.2.xx and 2.4.xx and the instructions say to compile the driver with a comand like:

gcc -DMODULE -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes - 06 -c dfe528.c

When I try to run this comile I get some errors saying (among other things):

You should not include /usr/include/{linux,asm}/ header files directly for compilation of kernel modules.

It then advises to:
Copy /boot/vmlinuz.version.h to
/lib/modules/'uname -r'/build/include/linux/version.h
then change the compiler options to include the revised file.

This is where I get the problem. During the copy it says:
cp: cannot stat '/boot/vmlinuz.version.h' : No such file or directory

I'm hoping that this is something obvious that i have missed, is someone can point it out to me I would be much obliged.

Thanks,

The file is actually /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h in my system

Thanks Cedrik,

You are correct, my file was in /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.13mdk/include/linux/version.h

But it turns out that I don't need to compile this driver, there is a compatible driver already compiled with the kernel. The driver that worked for my dlink card was 8139too.

Cheers,
