ubuntu 5.1 adsl install & access internet

In my ubuntu 5.1 i cannot setup adsl broadband modem, i have gone through similar threads in this forum but those solutions don't work on my system
During installation i forgot to create an account named root and now i cannot perform any super user functions form my ordinary user account.
Aren't there any user friendly gui tool that can guide me through the process.I am absolutely new to linux so please help me.
I am writing this post from the windows side of my hard disk so it would be difficult for me to provide output dumps.
thank you all for your help .

Hi, what do you mean by "Ubuntu 5.1" if you are using ubuntu 5.10.. its quite old.. id suggest using 8.04 tho.

but anyhow, this broadband modem of yours, is there a need to install additional software, to get the connection up?

if so thats most likely just a application to help with login, if your connection require username and password. but the username/password can also be set in the modem itself. so there is no need for a 3rd part application.

I might be able to help with that, if you provide more info.

Hi chadwill,
i have a dual booting system.I had set it up in win xp by only installing the lan card driver and no other additional s/w.
I have an ethernet port which is connected to the adsl modem on one end and the ethernet port on the other.Do i need to install the lan card driver ?

well, if your network card shows up in ubuntu, it should work tho.

could you try to run this command in terminal:

sudo dhclient eth0

if that dosent help you, run the following command and post all the output here

ifconfig
