Install a Red Hat 9 Server for Intranet & To provide Internet Access

Hello Wizards,

I am planning to setup an entire Linux Server for my Society to provide basic services like ftp, mail, etc.

We are currently having internet access from an ISP and he has setup a MicroTic firewall. I am not happy with the setup and want to setup a Red Hat 9 Server.

I am having 2 machines and We have 35 connections. My first server which is running Microtic as a firewall is a AMD Athalon 1.1 Ghz machine with 40 GB hdd.

The second machine is a P-IV 2.4 Ghz machine with 80 GB of hdd.
I need some guidance as to how to go about the whole setup. I have basic knowledge of servers in Windows and also in Linux.

Please advice.

Thanx,

Jimmax

start with the base install of the OS - I would recommend 7.3 for a server platform - with updates of course
decide specifically what services you wish to provided and to whom - i.e. will mail be made available outside, i.e. webmail
what kind of ftp access - public (anon) private - why? is it nec?
mail - does your isp house your mail currently? what kind? imap, pop3?
what do you want to accomplish?
squid is your best bet for a proxy (imho)
for mail delivery (sendmail) i would suggest a combination of MailScanner/Sophos AV and spamassasin - this has worked extremely well for me - is cheap and effective - during the past couple of weeks not one sobig variant got through and our spam capture is at about 96%
And of course iptables for your firewall.

Regardless of how you wish to move forward you need to develop a specific plan first, then stick to it one step at a time - Especially when you are wanting to provide so many services on one box.

Hey Friend,

Thanx for the post. I want it to be a private ftp server for the intranet to share files like music n stuff.

Also my ISP is not providing with any email so I wish to go for our own domain n have our own email.

We want to accomplish our own small community network with some good Internet access and file sharing and local news service and also providing email facility.

Thanx.
