The best reference (but also a very expensive one) is "Unix Network Programming: The Sockets API, Volume 1" by Richard Stevens et. al. That is the book that got me started.

You will also want your Linux man pages handy to get the details on how the function calls are actually implemented on your system (e.g. parameter types, return values, etc.).

You might think it is easier to start working from some sample code, but you will quickly find that you have bugs that you cannot fix. The Stevens book explains many of the pitfalls you will encounter as a novice sockets programmer and will help you avoid them.

Have you done a google search? There are about a billion pages out there on socket programming in *nix with sample code. There are tutorials all over the place.

Try this:

http://www.google.com/search?q=socke...r=&sa=N&tab=gw

One of my personal favorites: Beej's Guide to Network Programming starts out with the basics, and covers a lot of ground, fast. The Stevens book referenced earlier is the definitive reference on the subject.
