netlink routing socket to observe interface changes

Dear all,

In FreeBSD, the routing socket is capable of informing the process whenever there are changes made to interface/routing information.

My question is: Is the netlink socket in Linux equipped with such a functionality to receive interface information whenever changes are made to the interfaces? These changes can be a new interface is brought up or an interface is removed or there is a change in the interface status?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Regards,
Daryl

Hello trotters78,

I want to use Netlink with NETLINK_USERSOCK for communication between the kernel module and my user space module. I am new to kernel programming and netlink.

Can you direct me to some pointer where I can find the information about using the Netlink with NETLINK_USERSOCK option?

Thanks in advance.

Devel.

Hi Devel,

There are very few sources out there for Netlink.
I am also unfamiliar with NETLINK_USERSOCK.
I am afraid I can't help you.

However, if you want to know more about obtaining route/interface information via Netlink.
You can try this webpage.

Pertaining to this area, I have some experience and I will try my best to help you.
