I too am trying to get Redhat Linux (7.3 in this case) to provide MRTG graphs of its bandwidth usage. It seems the correct way to do this is to configure and start the SNMP daemon. Then configure and run the mrtg process via cron.

However, when trying to run the MRTG manually for the first time, I also receive the same error, and after many searches on the net, I see MANY people have posted this exact same question, but NO ONE has ever answered it. And here again, on the LinuxQuestions Forum, no answer exists.

Is it possible that SNMP exists on Redhat to be accessed by an external source, and MRTG is used to access outside routers, but the two shall never work together under Linux on the same machine????

Has ANYONE ever gotten this to work?

Solution Found

After a few more hours searching the net, I found the solution.

The default settings of the SNMP were too restrictive for MTRG to access what it needed. Here is the revised section of the snmpd.conf file:

Code:
####
# First, map the community name "public" into a "security name"

# sec.name source community
com2sec linuxbox default public

####
# Second, map the security name into a group name:

# groupName securityModel securityName
group mrtggrp v1 linuxbox
group mrtggrp v2c linuxbox

####
# Third, create a view for us to let the group have rights to:

# name incl/excl subtree mask(optional)
view mrtgview included .1 80

####
# Finally, grant the group read-only access to the systemview view.

# group context sec.model sec.level prefix read write notif
access mrtggrp "" any noauth exact mrtgview none none

# -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
