dns problem

The problem may be that the alcatel pro is a router in itself using nat, try putting the modem into bridged mode then use smoothwalls pppoe client for your user name and password, the pro's configuration page can usually be access via a web browser using the address of 10.0.0.138, just note any changes you make so you can put it back the way it was if it doesn't help.

Another thing.

When I probe for the nics it only find's 1 card the first time.
Then I have to probe again to assign a nic to the red interface.

Is this normal???

If you are having trouble bringing up the config page for the pro make sure you are connected to it directly from the pc , you should get a dhcp address of 10.0.0.1 subnet of 255.0.0.0 from the pro with a gateway of 10.0.0.138 , if you dont see something like this on your pc try adding these addresses staticly to your pc and see if you can bring up the config web page ,as for the probing twice for two nic cards , on my smoothwall I have to reboot twice for it to see both nic cards ????Go figure.

on your admin config page. Goto info - check that your dns proxy server has started.

Two NICS that are the same make will not affect unless they have the same MAC address. This is so rare. I dont think it is the case.

After all that it must be the configuration on your windows machine. if you set transparent proxy on and use dhcp you shouldnt go wrong.

Have you tried to lower the MTU on the client machines. Probably from 1500 to something like 1492 or even lower.

You can do this with DrTCP

Hope this helps.

Hi mate was in the same boat ! But probably a bit late now I found this link: http://www.netintegrity.com.au/webipcop.html

It's for IPcop but all the info applies to Smoothwall as well; works like a dream !!
