smoothwall problems

I have installed smoothwall on a pentium 75 with 3com 3c509 nic and a teles 16.3 isdn modem.
There are no error-messages, I have tested several other nics and the cabling is oke.
I can not reach the smoothwall via a webbrowser on another host
The smoothwall machine can only ping itself, pinging other hosts gives "destination host unreachable".
The same goes for pinging smoothwall from other machines.
I use 192.168.0.3 for the smoothwall and 192.168.0.1 and 2 for the others. I have tried other adresses as well, but that does not make any difference.
What am I doing wrong ??

Just because there are no error messages doesn't mean that your nic is configured properly.
Assuming your using the module because I doubt you've recompiled your kernel and included them in the kernel.

So if you are what does lsmod tell you?
Should have the module 3c509 listed and say it's being used at least once.
Make sure you have a line added in the file /etc/modules.conf displaying:

alias eth0 3c509

You can use "insmod 3c509" to load it right away.

What does ifconfig eth0 tell you?
It should have the right ip number and should display the words UP and RUNNING.
If not check the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 it should look something like:

DEVICE=eth0
IPADDR=192.168.0.3
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes

Use "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart" to restart your network instead of rebooting your computer.

lsmod lists indeed 3c509, wich is used by 1. By now I did recompile the kernel, at the moment I am trying to use a newer one. Nothing helps.

ifconfig mentions:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:24:18:65:44

inet addr:192.168.2.10 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

TX packets:9 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:9

collisions:0 txqueuelen:100

Interrupt:10 Base address:0x300

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1

RX packets:8 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

TX packets:8 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

any clue ?

In your first post you said you where using ip addresses 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3
In your last post you say that ifconfig eth0 shows it's using 192.168.2.10

Now am I confused or is there something different there that won't work? Especially if your using the netmask 255.255.255.0, you'll only be able to ping the ip's 192.168.0.1 up to 192.168.0.254

Edit the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
and make sure the ip address is in the same subnet.

Sorry, but someone suggested that using the zero in the ip adres could cause the problem. That's why I altered it.

The ip adres and it's mask are alright.

Personally I don't think it's a network configuration problem, I think it has something to do with the transfer from the nic upwards in the OSI layers.

By now I've tried several nic's, recompiled the kernel, tried a newer kernel, removed the isdn card , and reinstalled smoothware several times.

There is not much to configure with smoothwall, before you have a connection, from another host, via the nic.

What I haven't tried yet is to install a browser on Smoothwall and see if can connect to it locally, maybe I can change someting to the configuration there.

Eventually I've got the smoothwall running. I changed the nic again (for an eexpress) and it's IRQ and that apparently was the solution.

Thanks Mik
