Smoothwall Problems

Hi There,

I am trying to use smoothwall to setup a Firewall, dialing out via an Alcatel Speed-touch 330 adsl modem.

Current Settings are:

SMOOTHWALL BOX
Green NIC (3Com) IP 192.168.1.1; netmask 255.255.255.0
Red - allocated on dial up
disabled DCHP

WORKSTATION (winxp)
NIC IP 192.168.1.10; submask 255.255.255.0,
connection set to default gateway 192.168.1.1 (i.e Green NIC on smooth-wall) + set DNS servers as those from ISP

Major problem - can't see the S.W box from the workstation, and can't ping workstation from S.W box either.

completely invisible to each other.....

I've checked the that the nework card is up and running on the S.W box, and everything seems in order...

I've used both versions 1.0 and 2.0(5) of Smoothwall and same result occurs.

any suggestions??

A couple possibilities...
Network cable. Is it the correct type? (Regular cables connecting PCs VIA a hub, or crossover cable and no hub) Can you confirm the cable is good?
Firewall. If you drop the firewall on the non-Smoothwall PC are you still unable to ping?

Hi,

Its a cross-over cable as I'm linking the two NIC's directly (no Hub), brand new cabke too. This setup used to work when the old box used to have Win98 with ICS enabled....

will try dropping smoothwall onto another box.....

will post back shortly
