One of my mail servers died and I had to migrate it to another machine (hosting some other services). To avoid reconfiguration of all clients I set up a virtual interface eth1:1 on the new server with the IP-address of the dead box. Both eth1 and eth1:1 are in the same (local) network.

This worked fine for all clients in the local network, but now I have NO access to any service (pop3, imap4, apache2, ....) from outside my local network. tcpdump shows the packages arriving but no connection is established, the services don't recognize the connection attempt (no log entries).

Please help!

Perhaps you can show us a little bit more about your configuration. Network configuration, iptables and, of course, the version of Linux you're using. You've offered too few details.
