NIC Speed

I am using a Dell at work and I also am using an Intel Pro 1000 NIC at home all on Linux. Mostly Debian / Ubuntu / CentOS 5 and I was wondering how can one tell if their NIC is operating at 1000Mbps?

I am wondering if maybe some distro's can't operate my specific Broadcom Gigabit Xtreme onboard NIC at a gigabit LAN transfer speed and perhaps I would need some tuning to make it do so.

Can anyone please explain how one can tell?

Have you tried ethtool or mii-tool to look at the setup?

e.g.
ethtool eth0

Some cards don't work with ethtool so you should use mii-tool instead.

Isn't ethtool now known as wireshark...either way, I will give that a try. I did not know that Linux was unable to detect LAN speeds w/o a 3rd party application/software.

ethtool comes with Linux (at least the Debian, RedHat and Fedora distros I've installed). It is a command not a "3rd party app" except in the same sense that vim, GNU tar and other Linux utilities are "3rd party apps" on top of the Linux kernel.

Not sure what wireshark is but I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with ethtool or mii-tool.
