i have to dual boot windows xp and linux, because i have no linux comatible modem, and im not going to get one. when i move (like 3 months) we will get DSl or cable internet. the Host computer, or gateway, is running windows 98, and my computer is running redhat 8. both computers have an ethernet card. how do i network the two together so i can share the internet connection ?
i know how to network in windows, but i have no idea how to network in linux. i am a newbie, so please explain it in english.
my network card is detected by linux, and i know my IP address an everything.
You need to run 'Connection Sharing' on the Windows machine (don't know how it's called). Then the only thing (I hope so) is to change default gateway in Linux (to point the Windows machine).
im not sure this is right, it sounds all too easy. all i have to do, it login as root, go to a CLI (terminal) and type in setup, go to network configuration, and put in my laptop's IP addresses, and for "default gateway" just put in the IP address of the Gateway computer with cable internet access ?
if you statically configure the Linux box you need to include DNS servers. Easier is to set Linux as DHCP, ICS should then provide IPs, default gateway and DNS info via DHCP.
