My own server - bandwidth use optimisation

Hi everybody,
I would like to use my old computer and create a little server. I connect to the Internet trough local network - Ethernet. I want to connect this network to a server and then distribute it to the main computer:

Ethernet with an access to the Internet trough a gateway -> my server -> my computer.

I want to do that mainly because of one advantage. I would like to have some P2P applications and a download manager turned on on my server. Then, I would like to administrate them using my main computer (it's not difficult - some programs offer administration by HTTP - trough a website).

My main problem is to have an confortable access to the Internet from the main computer (connected to my server). I want my download programs running on the server to reduce their bandwidth use to an acceptable level when I want to surf in the Internet on the main computer. And of course I want it to happen independently from me and automatically - without changing download limits on P2P programs every time I want to check mail.

Is it possible to configure the server to act like this? I would be very thankful for your replies!
Jacek

I haven't tried anything yet. I know Linux a little but I'm a newbie in such topics as bandwidth opitmisation etc.

I would just like you to give me some clues - for example names of services and applications which do the things mentioned in my first post.

Then, I will be able to find something by myself and try to do something around my plans

Thanks for your help!

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Adv-Routin...rtc.qdisc.html
