-march optimisation for kernel

I've recently installed Gentoo 1.4, their kernels all have support for Athlon-XP optimisation, I fire up make menuconfig, and select it.

However, I've installed 2.4.22 from and the option isn't there, I've had to select the standard athlon.

I'd either like to have the Athlon-XP option, or simply to get gcc to compile for athlon-xp. I know it won't make much difference, but this is as much about learning how the kernel configuration works as anything else...

The standard compiler for the kernel is still 2.95 and CFlags get ignored when you build a kernel for a reason.
The gentoo kernel is patched to include that option - either find out what patch is responsible for it and install that or stick to the gentoo-sources.

Unfortunately they appear to have removed support for my SiI 3112A, which means I can't boot.

I'm searching for the patches they have installed.
