Mepis - Internet very strange!
Hi ...
I'm running Mepis, which I understand is based on Ubuntu, but let's you log in as root, which Ubuntu doesn't.
I use both Mepis and Windows XP on my laptop. At home, the ISP gives you the IP automatically. Internet always works with Windows XP, but I can't get it to work on Linux.
However, when I use Mepis at my office, I have to type in the IP and other numbers. Then it works fine. At home, I have tried everything and it's driving me nuts. At home, "eth0" actually connects. The icon appears showing that it is connected. Furthermore, the IP number is displayed, i.e. the IP number that is automatically assigned by the ISP. Also, where it says "number of packets sent and received", the numbers get bigger continuously. However, I have tried Firerox, Konquere and GAIM messenger. Nothing works! (They all work perfectly in my office.)
Any thoughts? I'm a Linux newbie, so simple instructions would be greatly appreciated.
