Please help with usb internet in Mepis

I just installed Mepis on an old 98 system. Everything runs great, except for the problem with connection to the internet. I have a 2 wire gateway that is hooked directly to the 98 via usb connection. Mepis doesn't seem to be able to detect it. I have even put in my gateway info and it still won't connect. Can anyone please help me with this problem?

I take it that by an old 98 system, you mean a computer that used to have win 98 installed on it? I suppose you had to choose the earlier Kernal when you installed Mepis. I don't know what a 2 wire gateway is, but since Mepis does a superb job at finding hardware, you might try the HCL to see if this hardware is supported by this Linux Kernal. I have never had a problem with my internet connection, but I use Ethernet, not USB.
