Mail Server and old computer
I am going to get a very old computer(165 MGhz CPU, 32 MB of Ram,) set up in about a week. I was thinking about what I could use it for. I have an older computer, (350 MGHz CPU, 327(aprox,) of RAM,) not as old as the one I just mentioned, that I will be using as a webserver and on my new computer I already have XP, Slackware and Ubuntu. So I wasn't sure what I could use this one for at first. What I decided, maybe, is to use it as a personal mail server. I want to set it up so I can send emails to everyone through the internet and recieve emails. Of course I really don't need to. I have a gamil account, yahoo account, LQ mail account, Lycos account and up to five accounts though my ISP, LOL. But I just want to do it and see if I can get it working right. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, suggestions or links that can help me along? I have never done this before. Thanks.
well you can certainly recieve low levels of mail on that spec of box without much problem. postfix might be your best choice of mta, although exim and qmail are also popular sendmail replacements.

Thanks. I will give that a try later this weekend and see what I like.

I thought about that, but again that is something new to me. Maybe I will try the email first and then see what I can do with the firewall. Though having it set up as a firewall does have some appeal.
To do that would I need two ethernet cards(10/100)? One in and one out? If so could I then connect it to my D-Link router and then split it to the other two computers?
Of Course,
U can use it for any purpose....u like .
But ifu want to use it as personal mail server..(?)...try out Qmail....
it's easy...and reliable...and more number of features..too........

One of the reason why I love linux is this. There are so many choices. None are right and none are wrong. Ninty-nine precent of the time nothing will crash your system(unless it is a user error or a test program/distro/etc.) There isn't just one excepted way and nothing else. It is all a matter of taste, what one needs or wants that matters. You ask a linux user what they think the best is and chances are you're going to get a reply that is slightly different to majorly different for each person. Through trial n' error, an open mind and asking questions we learn and understand. It is all about doing things our own way. Now why can't it be like that with other things in this world
