Angry Linux to Windows. Come in Windows, over?

I was running Mandrake 8.2 originally on my Toshiba 4090XCDT without any trouble. The only issue stopping me from dedicating the laptop to linux is the LAN and connecting to/from windows computers on the network. After I had managed to solve this problem (using Gnomba & Samba) I decided to upgrade to Mandrake 9.1 (upgrade first then complete reinstall). After 'drake 9.1 went on my once perfect LAN went pear shaped. I repeated the same steps in setup as I'd done in 'drake 8.2 but still without luck. I was about ten steps back, all computers were visible on the network but I couldn't initiate a connection to, or from, the linux laptop.

All hardware checks out fine from the Xircom Credit Card Ethernet PCMCIA card through to the receiving Windows machines NIC's, cable and hubs also check out fine. There was nothing over complicated about the network setup, all computers use static addresses, no Internet connection sharing, no firewalls (unless 'drake 9.1 has on) and generally pretty relaxed security settings. So I figured I was just too stupid to figure out 'drake 9.1's, ultra confusing, Samba setup out and reinstalled 8.2 again. Did that fix the problem? NO! The same problem existed after 8.2 was reinstalled. My once perfect linux laptop was now a bag of puss. Help me, please, cast of the shackles of Windows linux experts!

Sadly the laptop communicates fine over the network now that Windows is back on the Toshiba. Damn it.

Welcome to LQ.

Well samba works with both versions of Mandrake so pick the one you want to use then install it.

Once you have it installed check these - post he command output if you are unsure:
1) That samba is runing:
netstat -nlp
2) You have no firewall in place:
iptables -L

If the above is ok then take a look at your config file and set the name of your machine - ie:
netbios name=linbox

Then restart the samba services and check if the machine is visible on the network. If it is then create some users - eg:
useradd SKapper
smbadduser SKapper

Then try to access the linux box from windows.

Let us know how you get on.
