lights on router and dsl modem flashing while not online....

Sometimes while im finished online the lights on my modem and router continue to flash crazily even after i exit out of my browser, firefox.

What should i look at to try and diagnose this issue?

Should i look into netstat and the logs or something?

Thanks.

Is it a wireless router?
If not then I don't see any way there could be problems.
If so, check the router configuration pages to find which machines are attached then identify them. Most devices have their wireless MAC address dislplayed somewhere on, or in, the casing but otherwise you can usually find it through thr user interface.

No, its not wireless its an older wired router.
There is only one computer attached to the router.

I'm not sure why you think it's a problem? It's possible there are a few threads that take a while to close which have left sockets open. Then the same might be true with the router and so on.
If the lights flash when you've not opened a network aware application at all, then there might be something to think about.
If you install and run iftop (you'll need to do it with root privileges) it will tell you in real time what's going on network wise on your machine though.

Log on to the modem and router to see what it is doing. Some have ways to tell network traffic. Look also for un-need ports being open. Firewall rules not being used. Look for other devices online.

Using wireshark usually tells you what traffic is being seen at the computer.

Could be that some update app is running behind scenes.
