Konqueror only responds to IP address, not URLs ???
First let me say that I am a newbie. I've dabbled with linux over the past year, but nothing more, and I am now taking another crack at it with the new Suse Pro 9.2. Pretty cool so far, but as usual I have a few problems.
If I type in 134.197.31.17 into the location bar on a web browser (any of them) will get the webpage for my dept. (Univ. of NV, Reno -- Physics Dept.). If I type in http://www.physics.unr.edu/ (which should be the same thing ... and gets me to the same place in windows) the browser just sits and spins and never connects to anything. This is true no matter what URL I type in. Anyone have any clue as to what is wrong? Below is the results of ifconfig.
I am booted into WInXP right, so I'll try that in a minute. I did add three nameservers in YaST's setup GUI, but I'll make sure they made it into the right place. I take it /etc/resolv.conf is the right place?
I have the same problem with a recent Mandrake 10.1 install. I checked the file as instructed above and found that the nameservers are already present. Also, I found that if I open a terminal window and enter 'ping www.google.com' it will give a normal ping result. I think this implies that I am able to get to the nameserver on a ping command. In my case, Konqueror will work very rarely on a text URL. It will work completely normally if I enter the IP address. Anyone have any firther ideas?
Since I don't know what a web proxy is, I would guess that I don't have one. I have 3 computers hooked through an SMC LAN. The WAN port on the LAN goes to the DSL modem.
I can ping between all three computers OK. I can also ping both DNS and IP addresses OK. I have normal internet access on the older Dell machine using Mandrake 8.2 and Konqueror. The place I have the problem is on the E-Machine. It's set as a dual boot and the Windows98 web access works fine. The third machine is a Power Spec using Windows XP only and web access works there also.
I also just found that I can't get e-mail to work on the E-Machine in Mandrake. I get a "unable to reach host" when I try to read mail. I'm wondering if the same thing that prevents Konqueror from looking up IP's from the URL is also causing the K-Mail to be unable to find pop.mail.yahoo.com?
I had installed Mandrake 10.0 previously and had the same problem.
I was browsing some other threads and found one about Konqueror not working. Someone someone suggested opening a terminal and enter the cammand 'Konqueror' to see if any error messages popped up. I did that. No error messages. The Konqueror window opened and it worked normally! I shut down the system and rebooted it. Konqueror still works normally. Also, the K-Mail works, also (after putting the correct username!) I'm baffled as to how entering this command in terminal once fixed this problem, but it did!
I am also running mandrake 10, and had a very similar or identical issue, and by typing konqueror in the shell, it fixed my issue completely, not only in konqueror, but also in firefox.
