I'm curious and want to know how much I download from my computer running Ubuntu 8.04 in a month. Is there anyway to check this or any software I can install to find out?

How do you define "download" ? Web pages + their graphics? Files? All network traffic coming into your network interface from the WAN ?

I meant all network uploads/downloads in general.

Try:

ifconfig eth0 | grep RX

Change eth0 above to the ethernet device for your system (ifconfig -a will list them).

You'll see transmitted (TX) and received (RX) bytes and packets. Keep track of them any way you want.

There is other software that will track and maintain stats for you. Many of the desktop UI's have simple bandwidth monitors. But they all do essentially the same thing.
