i have a home network with a few computers attached to a switch

i have a dsl modem which is connected to the switch.when using windows XP all the computers can access the internet

i have 1 dual boot system with windows and suse linux 10.0

when this system is booted in windows i can access the internet but when i boot it in linux i cannot.i have disabled the firewall too.

Run ifconfig to see if it lists eth0, and if so look at the line with MTU in it to see if it contains the word "UP". If so, use the IP address listed (inet addr:xx.yy.zz.aa) and see if you can "ping" this box from one of your other computers. (Leave the firewall down on your Linux box for this test.)

If all of this works, use your Linux box to try to ping linuxquestions.org by IP address:

i tried ping 64.179.4.146

it works

afterwards i tried browsing with konqurer web browser and it works fine.

so i think it is a problem with the setting in the firefox web browser.

Hmmm. Sounds resonable to me. The only thing I can think of is to make sure FF isn't set up to use a proxy. Go to

edit -> preferences -> general -> connection_settings

and make sure it is set to "direct connection to the internet."

i had exactly the same problem and the asnwer is very very simple look boot on linux and with the computer on disconect the modem for about 1 minute or so connect the modem then go to yast go to network cards and just press next so it can read teh config files again then exit yast go to device selector on the tool bar you know i think there shoul be an red x as icon then press the icon select eth0 nd wait about 20 secons and you should have internet acces any questios email me

as stated above internet worked in konquror

on futher diging many forums i found the solution now it works fine

opened firefox

typed about:config

in the search bar

typed ipv6 in the filter and disabled it

now i can browse the internet with firefox too.

Install LinkSys SR-41 router. follow procedure to configure PC, router. On PC panel Internet Connections, note DSL will deactivate; LAN activate. (When router plugged in, router takes over PC.) Caution: In configuring router, as reas "User name", this means: "username@provider.net" (complete e-mail address). Failure to include complete e-mail address negates connection. I'm using PPoE per ISP. As indicated in LinkSys, other connections could apply. I just unplugged from modem to computer and re-plugged into WAN port, then plugged another cable into same computer port vacated with other end into one of four ports on router. Router will automatically configure as gateway between computer and Internet, provided the foregoing detail is faithfully observed. There's plenty of how-to's for either dial-up or dsl/cable singles; but nowhere has there been a simple explanation of how to connect a dual-boot, one-box system as above. Hope this helps another floundering newbie.

Get a Linksys SR-4 router and a eth0 card installed. Cable from modem to card, unplug card end; plug into WAN of router. Insert new cable from card to one of four ports. Follow the instructions from Linksys; I use PPPoE. Configure your router, probably PPPoE. On startup SUSE will find the gateway address automatically. (This for a dsl connection.)The router has built-in switches, just repeat cables to all your other computers.
