How do I setup an sql Server behind a router


Is it at all possible to set up a server behind a firewall/router?

Short question - short answer: yes. (Almost everything is possible )

Be more specific: (e.g.: What kind of server do you want to run? Kind of network connection? Which router? firewall? etc.)

I would like to run an sql server on my machine behind my dlink router I have an upgraded dsl package that allows 80 up adn 300 down. If you know of any documents that could help me in my venture or any server software that you recommend please tell me.

I dont know of any docs... There are different parts involved...

O.K. MySQL is my favorite... It listens on port 3306. So you have to tell your router to allow incoming traffic to this port - and to forward this to the machine (IP-address) MySQL is running on (virtual server).

What kind of application do you want to access SQL?
Do you have your own static IP adress on DSL? If not, you could use s.th. like dynDNS.com to get your local machine known to the public.
