I have a DSL router/4-port switch that also has a built in print server in it. I have tried to get RH 8.0 to work with it to no avail... The directions are very vague for Linux/Unix. All they say is that you "should add a printer in the same way that you normally do. The name of the printer is lp" and that's it. Also, there is nothing in their knowledge base about it. I'm using GNOME/RH8.0 and there are a couple choices of how to set up a printer with the printer set up wizard. I've tried setting it up as a UNIX printer by putting in the IP address for the server name and lp for the queue name, I also tried switching those around but that didn't work. I know that I got it to work with RH7.1 on an old machine, but that one is dead and I have no way of looking back to see the settings. The print server works fine with my WIN98 and W2K machines. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
P.S. the printer is an Epson Stylus Color 777, I'm pretty sure I am choosing the right driver, because I do remember the name of the file when I set it up in RH7.1, it was odd. stucup.sys or something, I'm not on my home computer now.
The ip should be the ip address of your router not your isp. If you type /sbin/ifconfig at the console its problably listed as the default gateway. The que should be lp. Sounds to me like your using an SMC/D-Link router. If you are your gateway/router should be 192.168.123.254 but check ifconfig to be sure or if you changed it from its defaults.
Try using the Gimp-print drivers for your printer Stc777p.upp.
I actually have a SpeedStream Router from Seimens. But I think that they are pretty close. Running /sbin/Ifconfig only gave me eth0's address, But I didn't change what the default gateway address was and I have it from the original documentation. El Kid -- Did you set up your printer as a Unix Printer? I tried it this way and still could not get a test page generated. If you have the smb router and got it to work, I would really appreciate the help.
The speedstream router is the same. The print server is a unix print server and the que is lp. I don't remember if I tried it with RH8 but I did get it to work with RH7.2 Mnadrake9, and 8.1 not RH7.3 or Mandrake 8.2 can't get it to work with Suse8.0 or 8.1.
Probably the best thing to do is plug it directly into your computer and see what driver loads and test it. Once it works there try it with your router.
I have Suse on my computers now (there coming off tomorrow). If I can find the RH8 cd's I'll test it, if not, I'll put Mandrake back on.
El Kid, I tried your suggestion, plugged it into the local printer port, got it configured, and printed a test page. Then I kept everything the same but changed the queue type from local to Unix, typed in lp for the queue name and typed 192.168.XXX.XXX (my router's address, not the ISP's address) and I get nothing. I wonder if RH 8.0 just won't work with it for some reason. Maybe a bug with this distro...
Did this work right away when you configured like this? I tried it last night, still nothing. AAHHHHHHHH, this makes me want to go back to Windoz. This should be so simple.
I wonder if I should uninstall print services and reinstall them. I believe it is pretty easy to do with the new RH 8 options.
