disconnected when the computer goes to sleep (gentoo)

I am a complete newbie, so please assume that i am completely clueless when helping me... my problem is that every time my computer goes to sleep, i lose my network connection (i am at school so it is a DHCP connection (i think)). the reason that i am even noticing this is i get disconnected from gaim (is that relevent?) i would really appreciate any help on this. thank you very much. also, if it's relevent, when i boot into windows XP i have no problems, so i'm assuming it's a linux-related problem.

When your computer goes to sleep it shuts down the network interface (and almost everything else). You are suppose to lose your network connection.

The only difference between how windows and linux handle it is windows probably automatically starts it back up where as in linux you need to have it restart the network interface on wake up. I am unfamiliar with how to go about doing that because I have never used power management like that before but I am sure somebody here can help you.
