Unhappy Can I make my computer sleep?

Hi, I have recently purchased Mandrake 9.1 PowerPack, and have followed up on a few threads as of how to make it go to sleep or hibernation. I logged in as root in terminal and did everything, to find out it wouldn't work. When I logged out into the main login I went into root and went into power/laptop/sleep and it was their working. I was wondering if I could somehow get that to work in my user name, or go into root but not have many privelages without the asking for my password etc - because I will most likely destroy Linux... or if their are any other suggestions anything would be helpful. My computer is too noisey at night, and I just want to put it into sleep to make it quieter instead of shutting off and all that.

So if anyone has had this same problem and could help me out, please??

if you're using apm, open a terminal, become root using su, and then do
chmod +x /usr/bin/apm

After this, you can put the machine to sleep by
apm -s

If you're using acpi, this whole thing is irrelevant :P
