Color depth of remote terminal

I would like to decrease the the color depth for a remote terminals connected to a server (via Exceed) in an effort to improve the redraw speed of the windows. I lowered the resolution and color depth on the server, restarted X, but when I log in remotely, I still get the higher resolution and color depth. It is like the remote terminal is ignoring the settings on the server. Does anyone know of a way to force the settings that I want from either server or remote side? Thank you for your comments.

When you say that you "lowered the resolution and color depth on the server", is that on the X server on the clients (Exceed)? (The client-server terminology for X is kind of counterintuitive.) Because it's the X server configuration that determines the color depth and stuff like that.

Another remote desktop connection method is VNC. Some implementations, especially TightVNC, is optimized for low bandwidth.

Also, a new technology called NX can dramatically speed up X and VNC across slow connections. You can try installing FreeNX server on your Linux machine.

I haven't lowered the color depth/resolution on the clients (Exceed-side), because I am not too sure how to do that without decreasing them for all of Windows. If anyone knows how to do this, it would be very helpful. I thought that decreasing the color depth/resolution on the server (LINUX-side) would do the trick, but EXCEED is just ignoring these settings. Thank you for the info on FreeNX and Tight VNC, I will check those out as well.
