I am trying to do a DAMn SMall Linux hd install on an old Compaq Armada 1520 laptop. Everything is fine except I can't get the color depth right. AT 8 bit the colors are very bad, pics are very distorted making it useless. I know that it will do 800x600x8 bit . I have tried Xvesa, Xfbdev servers. I've also tried changing vga modes, I even downloaded and tried to get Xchips server to run, as someone n the DSL forum suggested. I have tried diff Xfree86.config files for my video card, nothing works.. I don't have much experience with linux so please be patient.

Seems that your video chipset should be supported with the Xfree 4.3 svga driver, so higher resolutions should be possible. What are you using for a monitor? Can you post the sections ofyour XF86Config that are relavent to your vid card, monitor, and resolution/color depth?
