Changing IMAP servers

Hope there are some here who are familiar with IMAP servers.
I have been running my own IMAP mail server (Comminigate) here at home for the past 2 years as, at the time, there weren't many cheap imap services availbale. Most just offered POP which as we all know is quite limited.
It has been running flawlessly since then, but the filtering I have been using (Spam Assasin) I find has been quite poor and as most are now offering IMAP at a good price with filtering and anti-virus I have decided to let someone else deal with it.
The question I pose is this:
I have lots of emails on my server which I would like to keep, receipts etc. which I would like to transfer over to the new IMAP server. Is there an easy way of doing this ?
I have tried to sync all my mail and then log onto the new server, but when I sysnc with the new server all my mail gets deleted. I was hoping the new server would get a copy of my locally stored mail but it seems it works the other way around: my local mail gets sync'd with the server, and as there is nothing on the new server at present, I lose all my mail.
Hope you understand my post.
Any suggestions welcome.

TIA.

Open your mail client. Create an account to log into your local IMAP server; create an account to log into your distant IMAP server. Using your mail client, drag and drop mails from one account to the other.

That how I did when I transfered mails from a PC's IMAP server to another PC's IMAP server. ("select all" in your mail client is your frient )
