Backup mail from IMAP servers

I have a computer running an IMAP mail server, and was wondering how I would be able to backup mail on the local client computers through Kmail or such. I have had to format my server once, and upon the mail client reconnecting, I saw my old messages flash for a sec, and then dissappear as it verified its folder against that of the server. Is there any way to backup mail files locally to prevent such a situation from happening again.
