Hi,
I have a dlink dsl/cable modem 4-port switch and cable modem. This dlink device will put out a 192.168 address by dhcp (i.e. it acts like a dhcp server). When I first installed RH7.3 on my computer I used the dlink so I know it worked at one point with my system but later I plugged the computer directly into the cable modem. Now I want to use the dlink again but for some reason linux does not like the dlink anymore.
The SHORT version of what I’ve done:

I’ve forced dhcpdc to get a new ip address from the dlink dhcp server by using "dhcpcd –k" and "dhcpcd –c". I did get a new ip address which I verified with ifconfig. But when I boot the system pauses on “Starting system logger” (but is says [OK] after a moment) and the system is not responsive when I get to the kde desktop. So then I tried "setting-up" networking for dhcp in 'netconfig', this did not work either because on boot the system is unresponsive and I still get that pause on “Starting system logger”. When I’m at a prompt I can see that the dlink dhcp server did give me a 192.168 address, though.
(I checked the dlink in windows and it works fine there.)
What am I missing? Is there something else besides refreshing the ip address that needs to be refreshed so I can get the system to respond to a new dhcp server? It seems to me that linux should not be concerned that there is a new dhcp server out there as long as it gets an ip address! (I looked in the system logs and did not see anything out of the ordinary.)

The LONG version:
Connected the computer’s NIC to the dlink.
When I booted linux it paused at "Starting system logger" this comes right AFTER "Bringing up interface eth0" which did not pause. Both started with [OK], though.
Logged in but kde was unresponsive and had to do a ctrl-alt-f1 to get to the prompt. When I got to the command prompt and logged in I did an ifconfig and could see that my computer still had the ip address from the cable modem.
I tried to force dhcpcd to destroy its cache by issuing "dhcpcd –k" and made it get a new ip address with "dhcpcd –d". When I did an ifconfig I could see that my computer did have a 192.168 address.
When I rebooted it still paused at "Starting System logger". KDE was still unresponsive so I had to do a ctrl-alt-f1. When I got to the bash prompt and typed ifconfig I had a 192.168 address restarted kde but kde took forever to start up and nothing would work (i.e. I would click an icon but the program would never start.).
Got back to the bash prompt and did netconfig, said YES to setup networking, checked ON the "use dhcp" setting. Exited and rebooted.
On boot it still paused at “Starting System logger”. Ifconfig shows I have a 192.168 address but nothing in kde works as described above.
Plug the computer directly into the cable modem, Reboot and everything works!
If I boot to windows using the dlink everything is fine windows. i.e. windows does not have a problem with the dlink.
